I had to put quilting on pause this month (although, I’m almost done with my October Take Ten quilt top!) so I could work on some halloween costumes.

When my youngest asked to be Zelda from the video games, I got online to do a search but came up empty for a costume that was for kids- looks like the character Link is more popular. She was bummed, so I told her I knew someone who sewed who could help her out ;). She asked me who it was, which made the rest of the family laugh a bit!

I had to mash together several different patterns as well as draft a lot of pieces out on my own. I cleared out our local Walmart’s canary yellow double fold bias tape (my local JoAnn Fabrics is much, much farther away) and got sewing! The shirt zips up the back, but no photos of that because it was a mess! I’m usually pretty proud of my zippers but this one definitely won the zipper battle. After much searching, I did find a pattern on Etsy where I could have skipped a lot of the figuring and bias tape sewing but I was already well into the project when I found it. It had been buried under all the adult size patterns so despite my early pattern hunting it remained elusive until after I was already sewing. Darn!

Technically, there was quilting involved in this project! The white shirt base was two layers of muslin with batting between, then I quilted the Zelda shirt design on to it. I also quilted the leather skirt… section (my kids know what everything is called, I just followed their instructions) trying to mimic the design in the video game there too.

We had a lot of fun trying on the outfit as it progressed! I took pictures all along the way, mostly because it was taking so much time and lots of effort… and lots of unpicking 😉 so every finished step deserved celebration. I used to exclusively sew clothing, especially for my girls, so it was nice to return to my sewing roots for a bit. I definitely want to sew more for my girls now, just easier projects than this one, ha!

Our family is so happy to be back in the states where we can PARTY for Halloween! I hope everyone stays safe and has a fun time this year.

Happy Crafting!
