If you know me well, you know I LOVE Marvel movies, and Captain America is my absolute favorite character of all. It was only a matter of time before my love of quilting and Cap collided, so today I’m pleased to share my newest pattern:

This Team Cap mini quilt was inspired by Captain America’s shield, now a familiar and well-loved icon. I don’t enjoy doing applique, so I figured out the templates for both curved piecing and Foundation Paper Piecing for this pattern. Because of those two techniques, this is an intermediate quilt pattern.

Because this is a mini quilt, not a lot of fabric is required but the fabrics really are important! If you want to keep the iconic look, stick with reds, whites, and blues…

…but if you want to branch out to include Steve Rogers’ beloved, bionic bestie Bucky Barnes, try using black and gray in the mix too for his Winter Soldier character, like this mock-up using Texture fabrics by Riley Blake Designs. SO COOL, right?

The mini quilt finishes at 20.5″ x 20.5″, so it can be used as a center medallion on a larger quilt, or keep it small for a wall hanging for some fan-fueled wall decor. The two-toned star in the center gives it that shining, 3-D look from the films, but picking one fabric instead of two would work too. I quilted my mini to echo the shapes in the mini, with some small allover stipple in the background fabric.

Now, my nerd flag only flies half mast because I really, really can’t follow comic books. I’m an avid reader, but I just can’t get into a comic book! So, I do a lot of light reading ABOUT comic books 😉 so I can get all the special deets about Cap. Did you know his character is an artist? That’s why his drawing of a dancing monkey (Captain America: The First Avenger) looks so dang good, and why he sketched up some ideas for his new “costume” for Howard Stark. The man had skills to work with beyond just flinging a shield. I feel a kinship with him, since my sketches and ideas end up on fabric too!

I made sure to back my quilt in some Avengers fabric. Cap is, after all, the First Avenger. I love his “dad” role in the group (grand-dad? He is in his 90s, after all), there are so many moments in the films where I totally feel his parental pain.

Once you make one of these quilts, you’ll want to make another! It is actually easier than you may think- just a few curves, and the foundation paper piecing is an absolute beginner level design that is easy to put together, or as I say in the pattern… “Avengers… Assemble!

If you have a Captain America fan in your house, this is such a great gift idea. I gifted this to myself, after all. It hangs in the center of my sewing room mini-quilt wall, right in front of my work space. My favorite Marvel film of all is Captain America: Civil War for many reasons I won’t get into here (you don’t have the time for me to get into it, trust me 😉 ), but it solidly places me in Team Cap (as opposed to Team Tony, I suppose) which is how this mini got its name. I had to have this mini front and center so any inquiring minds would know on first glance in my room where I stood!

So, are you Team Cap too? Or want to make this for someone else who is? Snag the pattern in my shop!
