To have some fun with the release of Hush Hush, a low-volume fabric line, Riley Blake has put together a “Follow the Blue Bird” blog hop, where the iconic blue bird from the Riley Blake brand is featured within the low volume prints from the Hush Hush line. I chose to make a pair of hot pads- easy, a great gift, and a quick project!

My blue bird block is traditionally pieced, and I used a scrappy background just like the Riley Blake blog example. Along with the Hush Hush low volumes, I used prints from my new fabric line, Primrose Hill, for the body and Confetti Cotton solid in Butterscotch for the beak and legs.

The traditional block finishes at 8 1/2″ square, so as soon as I finished my first block I knew I wanted to make it into a small, useful project. I added some Insul-Bright along with the standard batting so it could withstand some heat and then quilted as normal.

I added binding, then extended the final corner into a loop and just sewed it back into the binding. I’m sure there’s an easier way- but this worked for me!

I think the scrappy low volumes is my favorite part of this cute little bird block- its so fun to see all the prints together! Did you know that the Hush Hush fabric line is a collaborative line, meaning its 21 prints come from 21 different designers? Yep! My contribution is the gray granny print, a geometric granny square design on bright white.
