It’s no secret that I love Halloween quilts. It’s a little odd, since it’s not quite chilly enough for much use for us, but I feel like the cooler weather is so close it’s almost like if I make more quilts, it’ll be winter sooner! 🙂

Winter is probably my least favorite season, but nonetheless, change is a wonderful thing.

This year, Jill Howarth’s line Tiny Treaters for Riley Blake Designs came out and I Could. Not. Resist. Everything about it is darling (as all of Jill’s fabrics are) but I just can’t pass up cute little woodland creatures dressed as ghosts and witches. Can you blame me?

The great debate when I have a fresh bundle of fabric is what pattern needs to accompany it. Unfortunately, too often I take too long and the window of creativity passes before I even cut into those happy bundles. I refused to let this happen with Tiny Treaters! I turned to Cluck Cluck Sew, as Allison’s patterns are generally simple and block based, which make for quick and satisfying quilts. Celebrate was the winner, the blocks can show off the fabric prints and it’s basically a party quilt… and I love Halloween parties. My mind works things around like this, you see, to justify all my pattern choices 🙂

A local quilter did the quilting for me, using a design called “Clockwork” and I loved the motion of the design. I bound it in a Riley Blake stripe, and we’ve been making good use of this quilt since!

My backing had to be pieced- my LQS mis-cut the fabric, and I ended up not having enough! I used leftover fat quarters from the bundle and a couple orphan blocks to make up the missing yardage. The main print is by Maude Asbury, she’s a genius with large-scale Halloween prints.

The large FQ pieces make for great fun in the dark- remember, there are glow-in-the-dark elements in this fabric line! My kids get such a kick out of it. Obviously the pieced blocks still glow but in smaller sections.

Happy Halloween, and Happy Quilting!
