Today, I’m re-introducing you to my very first quilt pattern! I designed this quilt about 11 years ago in anticipation of my second born, and when I shared my first version on my old website, the response was not what I expected! From all the interest and encouragement, I decided to write a pattern for it called Lucky Toss, and from that, Hello Melly Designs was created. This pattern is basically my origin story 😉 You can catch a glimpse of that original quilt here.

This version of Lucky Toss uses the 2 1/2″ precut for Pirate Tales by Echo Park Paper Co for Riley Blake Designs, plus some yardage for borders. I love the pirates, but I think the shark print was my real favorite!

The quilt pattern comes together really quick, and its no wonder its my very best seller, even after all these years! It’s also easy to make kits for, since it uses the precut strips.

After getting opinions from my kiddos, they all like the print with the big pirate ships. Each little detail in this fabric line is just so fun.

The real trick to this pattern is deciding which strips to line up together. I tried to keep the black prints evenly distributed through the top, as well as stripes. The pattern also doesn’t use all the strips in a precut fabric roll, so with careful cutting, I have enough leftovers to make another quilt top with a different type of design.

The quilt ends up a small throw size, perfect for growing kiddos… or couch cuddlers 😉 About two years ago, I made a smaller version of the quilt (just omitted a few rows of the blocks) to make a baby-size, and it was just as cute!

Of course I needed to use one of those pirate stripes on the binding! How could I not?! All in all, this quilt, this pattern, this fabric is destined to be a favorite for some kid out there!
