Now that school is starting back up in 2 weeks, I can share what we did for teacher gifts… at the end of last year. Ha! I’m behind, I know! But these definitely are worth the wait, they are the perfect teacher mini-quilt!

The Apple Core Mini Quilt by Lindsey Neill of Pen and Paper Patterns is both traditionally pieced and appliqued. I wanted my girls’ teachers to be able to hang these in their classes, so I shrunk the original pattern to 75% and went from there. I didn’t bother changing the cut directions by 75% so the stems are both different sizes, but they still turned out great!

My girls picked out the fabrics for their teachers, and I definitely approved. So cute.

I’ve now made three mini quilts with this pattern (one was the original size and hangs on my sewing room wall!) and I can say that it is probably one of the most satisfying little sewing projects. I definitely recommend it! Mini quilts are also where I have fun with my free-motion quilting, although these two were just graced with basic loops and meanders to save time.

It occured to me as I was wrapping these up that people who AREN’T quilters might not know what to do with mini quilts 🙂 so I had the girls write little “hang this on your classroom wall” notes at the bottom of their cards. Ha ha! I hope every time their teachers see these apples they remember my girls (for better, or worse 😉 ).
